More about platonic relationships with the opposite sex

Are friendship with members of the opposite sex good or bad for you? Well, as usual, it depends on who you ask.

More about platonic relationships with the opposite sex

Even without taking things to the extreme, many men and women tend to hang out with members of the opposite sex for platonic relationships and not only while single.

Now an article in the Huffington Post tells us that this may not be such a good idea. The reason? Attraction. It probably won’t surprise you to hear that it’s usually the men who are attracted to their female friends according to this latest study.

It’s long been one of those anecdotal observations that a platonic relationship between a guy and a girl usually involves a hopeful guy and a girl in denial. But that’s not to say women aren’t capable of being attracted to their platonic friends as well. That attraction, apart from making one’s current partner prone to jealousy if you’re already dating someone else, can also apparently affect your relationship itself. But here is where things become a bit more complicated. For some people, once a relationship starts, the partner is the end all and be all of their lives. Others have more complex social lives that require a bit more interaction. And after all, attraction is an urge. People develop crushes all the time throughout their lives. As adults we have the choice of whether or not to give into them.

While some friendships are indeed just hopeful future romances and nothing more, others can still thrive even when we give up the idea of being romantically involved. If you’re the sort of person who believes in platonic relationships with the opposite sex as a normal part of life, then it’s up to you to weight each of your friendships and decide whether it’s worth the risk of attraction to keep it going.
